
National Institute For Security Studies has commended, the transition caretaker committee chairman, Prince Babatunde Tella on Security, Good Governance and Sustainable Development.
It was a harvest of commendations and encomiums for the council chairman, as the delegates of the National Institute For Security Studies presented hm award of excellence when they paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
The delegates discussed Security, Sustainable Development and Good Governance at the Local
Government Level.”
The chairman was eulogised for the execution of projects and programs that have direct bearings on the living standards of the people.
He was specifically commended for improving the revenue base of the local government (IGR) to proof its viability.
Equally, the Council’s efforts to maintain peace and security of lives and property did not go unnoticed as the visiting team praised him for regular holding of peace and security meetings with relevant security agents to reduce various security challenges.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman appreciated the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for creating enabling environment for local government system to thrive.
He said that his administration believed in working with the people rather than working for the people as all projects executed ; such as provision of 8 motorised boreholes, grading of 31.6km rural roads, construction of Ultra Modern Shopping Complex through Private Public Partnership (PPP) arrangement, provision of VIP toilet at Elega market, financial empowerment to the needy and others are in line with peoples needs.
Tella added that all parts of the local government feel the presence of government with one project or the other to give them a sense of belonging.
He went further to inform the gathering that his administration in concert with various security agents have mapped out strategies at curtailing security challenges to the minimum at the regular peace and security meetings.
However, he listed paucity of funds and operational vehicles as factors facing adequate maintenance of security. Therefore,he called on well meaning individuals and corporate bodies, especially, political office holders at the state and national levels to join hands with government.
Commenting on the much agitated Local Government autonomy, Prince Tella said that he would only support the move if the Federal Government can take over payment of salaries of Primary School teachers, because a larger percentage of monthly allocation are used for payment of salaries of primary teachers leaving little or nothing for the Local Government to work with.”Anything contrary to this will further put Local Government administration into financial difficulty.”
Reacting to the need to extend eligibility of Course Participants to non- security persons raised by the Secretary to Local Government, Hon. Taiyelolu Egbeyemi, the team leader said that a request would be placed before the governor to send nominees for short term courses in the institute when the team meet with him.
The team charged the Chairman to forward details of revenue generated in the last 5 years to allow for comparison as well as list of capital projects executed by the administration.
The high point of the visit was the presentation of an award of “Good Governance & Sustainable Development” to the Chairman.
