

A group, 100 Women Lobby Group has advocated participation of women in the Nigerian politics.
The National Coordinator of the Group, Mrs Onibon made the appeal when she led members of the group to the Ogun State Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday, April 1st 2021 to advocate inclusions of women in politics.
Onibon insisted that 35 percent of Nigerian women should be allowed in politics, adding that women also have equal right to lead the people.
The Coordinator who regretted that women have a very low opportunity to lead unlike their men counterparts, added that people around the nation look up to ogun state to produce female political leaders.
She equally solicited support for training of women to enable vote and be voted for, saying “women need to be support for leadership positions”.
She said “There is a need for women to be supported in monitoring elections. We need to sensitized men and women to vote properly and also need to ensure that women register, in order to be voted for.
In his response, the INEC Commissioner,Babatunde Osibodu assured that the group’s request would be taken into consideration with pledge that the Head of Department of Voters education would invite 100 Women Lobby Group for training in the future.
He pointed out that registration is already on at national level, saying “We therefore need to indicate as 100 Women Lobby Group that we want to monitor elections. We also need to consolidate with various activities and create awareness on women inclusion”
The INEC boss also appealed to
women to register as soon as possible in order to be able to contest in elections.
His words ” In 2006, equal numbers of men and women registered but less than 30 percent of women voted.
This, according to him needs to be improved even as he noted that in future elections, monitoring would be done in real time.
